Call to Conscience '09
A Celebration of Black History
Saturday February 28th, 2009
Museum of Glass Tacoma, WA
- A review and pictures -

Call to Conscience 2009 was once again a "Beautiful Success"!

Call to Conscience, Washington State's annual celebration of Black History Month, was an evening of history, dignity, community service, and celebration!  The speeches and presentations ranged from insightful to inspiring and in some cases controversial but courageous.

A Historical Moment in Tacoma's Museum of Glass!

Chief John R. Batiste, Chief of the Washington State Patrol, the largest public safety, law enforcement agency in the state introduces Snohomish County's first African American Sheriff, John Lovick.  These two top African-American law officials together was history in the making!

Seattle City Council member Bruce Harrell and Master of Ceremonies Tony B
Bruce was also one of this years "Call to Conscience" co chairs.  His keynote address was inspiring.  His comments, though sometimes controversial, stirred passion and laughter.  His words resonated with the audience as he urged encouraged education, community and responsibility!

Buffalo Soldier William Jones.
Out of 15,000 Buffalo Soldiers only eight are still alive!

Call to Conscience was proud to have 95 year old Buffalo Soldier "William Jones" display artifacts from his personal museum as well as mesmerize the audience with stories and oral history in the theater!  Most of all "he had fun" talking, engaging youth, and found time to do a little flirting

We were ALL honored by his prescence.

Aaron Dixon co-founder of the first Black Panther Party formed outside of California, the "Seattle Chapter" displays materials to a rapt audience along with Buffalo Soldier William Jones.  The "dignity" of the historical remembrences and speeches shared on this day was matched by the "spirit" of the participants, audience, speakers and staff!

Afeni Shakur: In Her Defense
The Exhibit was incredible and the "sneak preview" of the play was a "once in a lifetime experience" according to one of the attendees!

Captured by the conversation!

Taking it all in...

....checking it all out!
