The annual “Call to Conscience” Black History Month Celebration, one of the largest in the country, will take place at the Washington State History Museum, 1911 Pacific avenue, Tacoma Washington, Sunday, February 24th, 2008 from 3:30 pm – 8:00 pm.
“Call to Conscience” is an effort to create awareness among tens of thousands of people about health disparities and health related issues that disproportionately affect the African American population and all people. “Call to Conscience” will offer keynote addresses, health tests and screenings, information, entertainment, historical African American displays and much more! Call to Conscience, A Celebration of Black History , celebrates the past and present achievements of African Americans, while providing important health and lifestyle information to help the entire community become more aware of health related issues and resources. We believe that your organization has much to offer and even more to gain by participating in this highly visible community event.
“Call to Conscience” A Celebration of Black History will accommodate a wide variety of information, resources and services. We are looking for organizations to engage the audience.

4:00 pm – 5:15 pm – Panel discussion produced in partnership with the United States Department of Health & Human Services – Health Disparities and Emergency Preparedness. Coordinated by Region X Director James Whitfield.
5:30 pm – 6:30 pm – Reception , social, performances and community outreach and resources

“Call to Conscience 2008”
Chairperson – Washington State Senator Rosa Franklin
Senator Rosa Franklin is history in the making. Senator Franklin is the first African-American female elected to the Washington State Senate. She began her political service to the people in Tacoma's 29th Legislative District where she was elected to the House of Representatives in 1990. She served in the House of Representatives until January 1993 when she was sworn in as the State Senator from the 29th Legislative District. Rosa is currently serving her third term as a Senator.
Her leadership roles in the Senate are a tribute to her accomplishments, as well as a symbol of the respect given her by the Senate body. She has served as President Pro Tem of the Senate, Vice-President Pro Tem and as Majority Whip of the Senate. Currently she serves as Democratic Assistant Floor Leader.
Dr. Garth Graham – U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health
The Office of Minority Health develops and coordinates Federal health policy that addresses minority health concerns and ensures that Federal, State and local health programs take into account the needs of disadvantaged, racial and ethnic populations. Dr. Graham also founded the Boston Men's Cardiovascular Health Project, a project designed to identify behavioral explanations for decreased adherence to adequate diet and exercise by African American men. He has authored scientific articles and presentations on cardiovascular disease, HIV/AIDS and community medicine. The Business Network Journal also named him one of the Forty Leaders Under Forty.
Dr. E. Faye Williams - National Chair, National congress of Black Women
Dr. E. Faye Williams, Esq. is also President/CEO of Natural Health Options of Washington, DC. She has exclusive manufacturing, marketing and distribution rights to natural products created from the work of the scientific genius, Dr. George Washington Carver. NHO is one of the successful businesses inspired by the 1995 Million Man March—for which Williams served as Host Committee Co-Chair and International Spokesperson. She was one of few women to address the March.
Marcus “Tru” Trufant – Seattle Seahawks All-Pro cornerback
Marcus was chosen by the Seattle Seahawks with the 11th overall pick in the first-round of the 2003 NFL Draft. Trufant, who celebrated his 27th birthday on Christmas Day, is a Pro Bowler for the first time in his five NFL seasons. The Tacoma native and ex-Washington State star had a career season in 2007 with seven interceptions, tied for second-most in the league. Marcus was named as one of eight national finalists for the NFL Neighborhood MVP Award for community service. Marcus also founded the Trufant Family Foundation, a foundation that not only direct and supports specific existing programs, it maintains its own programs as well.
Bender - MD, PhD, Director of the Odessa Brown Comprehensive Sickle Cell Clinic
After training in Pediatrics and Hematology / Oncology at the University of Washington Bender continued lab research on the regulation of beta-globin genes, the ones mutated in sickle cell. He currently runs a multi-disciplinary teaching clinic aimed at providing comprehensive care and continuity to patients and families while educating nurses, medical students, residents, fellows and trainees from other programs about sickle cell and chronic disease, and their impact on patients, family and the community.

What is Black History Month?
Black History Month is an annual observance in February, celebrating the past and present achievements of African Americans.
Why is there a focus on “health and wellness”?
Statistics from ALL sources document the disproportionate effects that people of color suffer due to unhealthy life choices, lifestyles, health disparities and life circumstances. MUSICA Entertainment, through “Call to Conscience” is creating awareness to these issues and calling for social action among people of color, and ALL people. Call to Conscience 2008, A Celebration of Black History, reminds us all of past achievements, while impacting healthy lifestyle choices, community building, career choices, economics and education. We are excited about this opportunity through “Call to Conscience to impact the total person and the entire community.
What strategies will “Call to Conscience” use?
- Creating awareness by focusing on community based health education programs
- Dynamic keynote speakers addressing a variety of health and wellness issues
- “Call” to social action through resources available, locally, regionally and nationally.
- Developing a sense of pride and empowerment toward healthy living and lifestyles to prolong lives, while reducing adverse health conditions
