When: Saturday October 4th, 2008
Time: 12:00 noon – 4:00 pm
MUSICA Entertainment is producing a non-partisan pop culture youth voter registration drive at City Hall in Seattle on Saturday October 4th, 2008, the last day to register to vote in the national and local elections. We are excited to have film, television and sports celebrities along with indie rock bands, hip hop groups, DJ's and other eclectic music stylists to come down, speak and/or perform and support voter education.
Advocates on ALL sides of the issues will be there along with candidates to help create an open forum for dialogue to assist with helping voters make informed decisions. King County Elections will be on hand to register voters and will also bring the accessible voting unit which was introduced at every polling place in 2006. Visitors will be able to familiarize themselves with the machine and cast a test ballot. They provide large, high contrast, bilingual text, an audio ballot option, touch screen operation, adjustable height, and a numeric keypad.
This family friendly non-partisan event also includes a “kid’s zone” where youth of all ages will be able to exercise their future voting rights with a unique kids ballot, and write their dreams for the future on a 10 foot postcard which will be displayed and made available to all local and national candidates. Kids will also receive FREE voting related coloring books.
King County Elections will have voter registration forms in English, Chinese, Spanish, Cambodian, Korean, Laotian, Russian, and Vietnamese.
Seattle City Council member Bruce Harrell today announced his support for this public effort encouraging youth to register to vote by the October 4, 2008. The Registration Drive will be held at Seattle City Hall from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. According to representatives from King County Records Elections, "To be eligible to vote you must be registered to vote at least 30 days in advance of the November 4, 2008, general election."

If you miss the 30-day deadline and are new to the state, you can still sign up in time for the election, but you must register in person at the King County Elections Office no later than 15 days before the election.
* MUSICA Entertainment is producing the youth voter registration drive. MUSICA Entertainment has placed a high priority on promoting voter registration among young people 18-25 in a quality community-based non-partisan outreach campaign. Among the strategies to accomplish this task is providing a fun, safe, environment to assist with voter registration while finding solutions to barriers that may keep folks from voting. What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance.

Juneteenth Celebration in Austin, Texas
June 19, 1900
Today, Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement and for planning the future. Its growing popularity signifies a level of maturity and dignity in America. In cities across the country, people of all races, nationalities and religions are joining hands to truthfully acknowledge a period in our history that shaped and continues to influence our society today.
HAPPY JUNETEENTH FROM MUSICA ENTERTAINMENT!
Thank you for your interest in furthering open dialogue and education through music.
